Could you spare a few hours a week to volunteer as a community car driver?

THIS is the questioned being posed by organisers of Leiston, Saxmundham & Aldeburgh Community Car Service.

The car scheme has been established since 1990, but is in urgent need of new drivers to meet the current demand, people who are willing to give a few hours of their time to drive local residents on straightforward but essential journeys.

Many older residents rely on our volunteer drivers to help them get out and about and do everyday things that most of us take for granted, journeys that enrich lives and really add to the pleasure of day-to-day living.

A simple trip to the shops or a routine appointment at the doctors can be complicated, if not impossible, for some people without the support of a volunteer driver.

These journeys are especially important where mobility issues can make it difficult, if not impossible, for older people in rural areas with limited transport services.

Our drivers find it a rewarding way to spend their free time because they know what a significant difference they are making to the lives of others.  Ray Haines a volunteer driver says “It’s very rewarding to put my energy into helping people who, for whatever reason, find life a struggle. Not everybody can jump in the car and drive to the shops or to the hospital, which is where I can help.”

So, if you enjoy driving and have some spare time, you may be just the person we are looking for.
