Haymaking on the Green – the more the merrier
Haymaking is underway on the Holton Road side of White Bridge. If we don’t cut these meadows the coarser grasses and commoner plants dominate and the rarer wildflowers and creatures who live among their roots will die out. On the Holton Road side of White Bridge, in the meadows called Folly Meadow, Poplar Meadow and Orchard Meadow, we can hope to see adder’s tongue fern, common spotted orchids, ragged robin, alder buckthorn, slow worms and grass snakes, toads, lizards, Norfolk Hawker dragonflies, bats …. but these can’t flourish if we allow the ranker growth and scrub to get established. So if you love to see these plants and animals on your walks through the Green, and if you can spare an hour or two on a Wednesday morning, meet the volunteers at 9.30 at the gate at Arthur’s Wood, just off Quay Street down the little track from the railway bridge.
Meanwhile, remember that the Community Orchard is for scrumping. Apples and plums are getting ripe – the birds get nearly all the cherries – and you’re welcome to take them.
