Come and discover – or rediscover – sailing!

Sunday 23 May 2021

It is a special Open Day at Aldeburgh Yacht Club (AYC) and Slaughden Sailing Club on Sunday 23 May. Everyone can come and find out more about these two excellent clubs with the chance to talk to members and be shown around the facilities. AYC is offering some fun on the water (but must book in advance*), and Slaughden Sailing Club will be hosting a similar but ‘land based’ event. Whether you want to discover a new sport or re-engage with a past passion, this is a chance to try sailing and experience the beautiful river Alde from a unique vantage – on the water – under wind or engine power. Sailing is an activity that can be enjoyed at any age and at many levels from competitive racing to gently pottering about in a boat.
This is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) initiative to encourage people to try their hand in a boat, be it a dinghy, a yacht, a kayak/canoe or a powerboat.
At Aldeburgh’s clubs – and following government safety guidelines – qualified instructors and experienced sailors will show you the ropes and take you out on the water. There will be river trips in a launch giving passengers views of the estuary from a different perspective. Light refreshments are also available in the friendly clubhouses.

Bring warm clothing, shoes that can get wet, a spirit of adventure and discover a fun hobby, two great clubs and make new friends.
The clubs have different facilities and different things to offer depending upon what you are looking for. Both hosting Open Days on 23 May is an ideal way for visitors to compare and contrast and decide on the club most suited to individual needs.
With Staycations likely this summer there has never been a better time to join a local sailing club. AYC will be offering ‘one-day-only’ joining incentives.
*Prebooking is essential so that the organisers can allocate times for sailing experiences and follow government guidelines, ensuring that everyone has a safe and satisfying session.

“The past year has shown the importance of being out in the fresh air and sailing is an ideal way to enjoy a special outdoor sport and appreciate our beautiful Suffolk landscape. The sailing conditions at Aldeburgh are exceptional – ideal for days out on the water with friends and family during the summer months, or for competitive sailing through the year from early Spring into the Winter. There is something for everyone to enjoy in and around the River Alde – so come and find out more about sailing at AYC and at Slaughden Sailing Club,” says Aldeburgh Yacht Club’s Commodore Johnny Dawson.
