The George pledges to bring the community together

You may have seen Tom Kerridge’s TV series on saving Britain’s pubs and how vital they are to their local communities. Or you may have read a recent survey from Jackson-Stops Estate Agents that said the village pub was voted as the nation’s most sought after community component of an English village.
Suffering a major fire in 2013 The George Pub in Wickham Market is one such pub and much more. When restored, the fully updated pub will include a vibrant community space, a family friendly restaurant and a beer garden to the rear. Add to that the buildings historic significance (it dates back 500 years) and it’s no surprise that the Grade II listed George attracted a first round Lottery Heritage Fund Grant of £82,000 to help with its design and preparation for final restoration.
A second round bid is currently being prepared and nearly £1million has been earmarked by the Heritage Fund to help with the final restoration and building works. Restoring a building of this importance is expensive and will require more than Lottery funding, which is why a Pledge Campaign has been launched. Pledges will be taken as an expression of interest to invest in the society and only after the society have secured all other funding will they ask for pledges to be converted into cash to buy shares.
Owning shares will mean investing in a community as well as owning a part of an important community asset. A significant level of interest will a crucial part of the Society’s funding plan when assembling their second round NLHF application, as well as continuing to demonstrate to them and other potential funding bodies that there is a continued high level of project support.
