Don’t let the virus stop you getting involved in theatre arts

Attempts on the existence of theatre have been tried before, with the intention to stop it, unlike the current inadvertent effects of the pandemic. Today, with the possibility of another National lockdown looming, UpShoot Theatre Company continues to plan a full year of theatre activities and engagement with the community it resides in.

The saying ‘Necessity is the Mother of all invention’ comes to mind. It’s been documented that during the earlier lockdown, people turned to creativity in order to weather the creeping threat of the pandemic. UpShoot met online and rehearsed in a socially distant way to put on 7 outdoor socially distanced shows in September, in and around Bungay consisting of Songs from Musicals and Black Adder bringing joy, laughter, connection, shared aims and hope to the fore. They’ve been continuing a wellbeing and the arts project online, and again socially distanced, in their Dr Hills’ Casebook project with The Restoration Trust. The final product of this was to be a toured theatre show but will now be made into a film. Finally, they managed to write a script, workshop, rehearse and perform 8 shows of a very well received pantomime at the Fisher Theatre, Raiders of the Lost Panto all about what it would be like to lose this wonderful Christmas tradition. UpShoot are determined to continue offering what they do in any way they can because watching and being part of live performance helps people keep going.

The next major project is another outdoor show for the summer, anticipating limit actions will still be effecting indoor performance. The show, Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim, will be coming to woodland glades near you with the magical fairytales of old, cleverly tweaked to show the less idealistic and more likely outcomes of these stories, filled with humour and pathos.

Open auditions will take place on January 20th, 24th, 27th & 31st, singers/actors from the age of 18yrs up are all welcome.
