Harleston University of the Third Age
THE University of the Third Age is an international organisation aimed at people who are no longer in full time employment. The over-riding philosophy is that of folk meeting together for all kinds of physical, intellectual and social activities. These are provided by the members for the members.
In a recent countrywide survey, the most popular subjects were Walking, History and Outings while some of the more unusual interest groups were Blacksmithing, Druidism and Bus Restoration! Groups meet in private houses, pubs and public halls.
In Harleston, the regular general monthly meeting takes place every third Wednesday at 2pm at the Swan Hotel.
Our speaker for October will be Joyce Kimber and the subject is “Codes, Cyphers and Enigma”. This will cover the very earliest known ‘secret’ writing from 480BC up to the development of the Enigma and Lorenz machines with particular emphasis on the role of Bletchley Park in WW2.
In November, the topic, given by Tony Diamond, will be “Chocolate”. We can’t promise any free samples but we can guarantee a really entertaining afternoon.
